There's something a little bit special about titanium. Following on from our last post, here is the frame we'll be using for the custom gravel build.
The full custom geometry on this frame is inspired by some of the more progressive gravel bike on the market. Longer and slacker than most gravel frames it's guaranteed to avoid toe overlap for shorter riders.
Couple that with short chainstays, clearance for wide 27.5x2.25 tyres or 700x45, a t47 threaded BB and integrated headset routing this should turn out to be a very clean looking and versatile bike.
The seat tube is designed to be able to take MTB sized dropper posts giving the owner a massive choice of dropper posts for when gravel turns chunky.
Tons of mounts and ability to take a rack would make this a fitting bikepacking rig also.
We're super excited to see this built up!

We covered tyre selection for our upcoming gravel bike build a couple of weeks ago with the Tufo Thundero.

The next reveal is the drivetrain and brakes.

This will be built with a 1x drivetrain pulling the best components from different manufacturers.

Why 1x? In our opinion this setup blends the widest gear ranges with the least complexity and lowest maintenance making it ideal for a versatile do everything rigid bike.

We've chosen the E*thirteen Helix R cassette for its blend of low weight and massive gear range. The 9-50 range on the cassette allows a range of gearing equivalent to most road and gravel 2x setups. Not having a front derailleur also frees up the left hand lever to be used for a different purpose 👇

A 12 speed Shimano GRX derailleur and lever set will be used for shifting and braking duties. The new groupset from Shimano has official support for wide range MTB cassettes making this setup possible without resorting to electronic options or unnatural hacks. The left lever is freed up to be used to control mechanical dropper posts for when things get rowdy.

Finally stopping is the responsibility of Formula Cura flat mount brakes, bringing massive amounts of power on a low weight and serviceable package. The extra zazz is a welcome touch!

This is shaping up to be a unique and exciting build for one lucky rider.

We have an exciting full custom gravel bike build we'll be unveiling soon. Let's go through the component selections and why we made those choices.

Starting at the tyres, this bike will see a 60/40 mix of sealed and unsealed services.

We settled on 700x40 tubeless Tufo Thundero tyres to provide both low rolling resistance on road and grip off road. If you haven't heard of Tufo Tyres check out the impressive results they achieved in this independent tyre test. https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/cx-gravel-reviews/tufo-gravel-thundero. Had the ratio of road/off road been reversed we may have elected for a slightly wider variant.

Should we want to take on more aggressive off road terrain, a smaller wheelsize with a wider tyre would also be an option.

Remember, tyres are the only part of the bike that touches the ground. We never recommend compromising on tyres, always buy the best your budget allows. Also remember to check your frame and fork clearances when going wide with tyres.
