Make mistakes, make lots of mistakes. There's a few things I know about mistakes from decades of you guessed it, mistakes.
- each mistake is an opportunity if you let it be. Own it, embrace it, don't look for someone to blame. Think about what went wrong, how and what is needed to prevent recurrence. Learn and grow.
- Making mistakes is an indicator that you're out there putting in the work, you're doing something, this is progress. Keep after it and work to be a little less s**t everyday.
- A mistake is one of the single fastest ways to learn. This is proven through science. Boom, mistake made, the brain releases chemicals that light up the brain with electrical activity, you experience raised awareness, and this is the time to work through the mistake and develop a correction. Now it is cemented, don't wait.
- Being open to the possibility of mistakes can, in some situations support achieving an acceptable outcome sooner. Just apply this formula:
If we stuff this up, can it be reversed with minimal effort?
Yes = full send, work with what you have, exercise your current knowledge, make sure you are somewhat coherent and alert. Get it done, if it goes sideways, simply reset and go again.
No = approach with caution, consult others with the appropriate knowledge and work out whether the benefit outweighs the cost to recover......now ask another question...what is the likelihood of harm to people or relationships?
For some this may trigger as unacceptable and for others it might be another round of benefit vs cost measurement. If proceeding under these conditions, make sure you have a robust plan, the right people supporting you, and you are mentally and physically at your best (well rested, fuelled with healthy meals, clear of mind and sharp as a razor), go easy and make course corrections as required.
I'm running out of text allowance here, next time I f**k something up I'll share some insights on above and below the line thinking and what this means.
