The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.
Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.
People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.
People will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.
You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.
Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a provider, family support, friend, spouse...
There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.
Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!

As a family we ran a Speedcar with our son Matt driving it from 2008 through to 2016. When Matt decided to move to England we parked the car up for a year or so until we decided to offer the car to drivers wanting to race without having to buy one.

In 2018 we were in Sydney with the car at the annual 50 lap event when our driver Reid Mackay had a massive crash and suffered some serious injuries. Fortunately Reid fully recovered eventually, but it made me turn my back on the sport in competition form and just be a spectator.

Earlier this year over a drink, Andrew Roeser said to me how he’d love to race a Speedcar. With Andrew being a multiple Australian champion in speedway karting I thought this bloke would probably do alright in a Speedcar.
I said to him, I’ve still got a lot of Speedcar gear in the shed, I’ll need a diff, steering box and fuel tank and the engine needs a rebuild. My niece Caitlin wanted to be part of the deal and said she’d buy the three pieces needed.

Previous years I would always send the engine out to be rebuilt. This time I thought to myself “I’m a mechanic, why shouldn’t I do the rebuild?”
So our winter project was to build another car. We set out to have the car ready for a day at the dyno and then the first practice night in September at Toowoomba Speedway.
Dyno day was good, first practice night was fair. The second practice night we learnt that the engine had some gremlins. So it was out with the engine and a strip down. I found all four exhaust valves were bent. Four new exhaust valves, an adjustment to the cam shaft timing, a 6 thou thicker head gasket, new cam followers and reassemble. At this point I must mention that my trainee Candice, had quite a bit of input with the engine reassembly. Candice is very handy with automotive air conditioning and now knows the workings of an internal combustion engine.

There wasn’t any opportunity for another practice so it was into the first race meeting of the season. Andrew drove very well at his first race meeting and the engine was spot on.

The second show was last Saturday night, the car was great, Andrew getting the hang of things more and the team had an enjoyable night.
Below is a recap that Caitlin put together of our Saturday night.

Our next outing is boxing night at Toowoomba Speedway. If you’re at the track, drop by and say g’day. We’re easy to spot, it’s the only green/black Speedcar in the pits.

I have apparently been reported for Facebook terms and conditions violations. I guess it’s why I haven’t seen any of the adds I pay for on Facebook lately.
It fascinates me that someone has reported the Lockyer Auto Air page for something that I’ve allegedly done wrong or inappropriate. Especially when there is absolutely nothing I have done to deserve this.

Well there goes another year folks.
I’m taking a break next week and will be back at it again on January 3.

A huge thank you to all my customers, the new ones and the people who have had me back to do work on other vehicles in their fleet, I really do appreciate you all. The bonus from working and building up this business is some of the friends I’ve now made. I reckon that the Lockyer Valley and Summerset people are some of the nicest people around.

Anyhow,,, I’ll wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Stay safe… Gary
