POV: The only problem customers are happy to hear in Far North Queensland ā„ļøšŸ˜‚

The customer was told the evaporator was leaking and that the dashboard had already been removed to inspect it. They were even told they found metal coming from the evaporator.

Something didn’t add up.

After carrying out my own diagnosis, I pressure-tested the system with 270 PSI of nitrogen, and it held pressure perfectly.

In my experience, removing an evaporator requires removing the entire dashboard a job that typically takes far longer than the time the vehicle had reportedly been at the workshop.

The result? The evaporator didn’t need replacing, and the customer saved $6,000. šŸ’°

This is exactly why a proper diagnosis matters. Don’t replace expensive parts based on assumptions get a second opinion first.

If your screen or climate control is bugging out, it’s often just a software glitch. A simple system reset can fix it in 5 minutes, no tools, no mechanic.

Touchscreens + climate modules can freeze or stop responding, but resetting the car system usually brings everything back to life.

Try this before stressing or booking a service šŸ‘Œ

Got called out by a 70-year-old pensioner lady who showed me a quote from Westco Motor Cairns Mazda.
$2,900 for a condenser part and $600 for labour.

I was shocked. The real cost of the part is around $300. Almost 10x cheaper.

I checked everything myself.
Pressure tested with nitrogen at 280 psi for 10 minutes, no pressure drop.
Vacuum test held at -14 psi for another 10 minutes.
No leaks at all.
Added dye just in case for the future and did a full regas.

Aircon is now working perfectly, blowing 3 degrees from the vents.

Total cost for her: $150 and peace of mind.
She can now drive around for Christmas with aircon in this FNQ heat.

Shame on Mazda for ripping people off, especially elderly ladies.
That could be anyone’s grandma. We have to look after them.

Gauge was climbing over 400psi, compressor cutting out at 450 thanks to the safety switch šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø Customer thought it needed gas but the fan wasn’t spinning, so no airflow to cool it down.
The fan’s job is to pull air through the condenser and cool the refrigerant as it changes from gas to liquid. If it’s not running, there’s no airflow, so the refrigerant stays hot and doesn’t condense properly. As a result, high-side pressure can easily climb past safe levels (400–450 psi or more), especially on a hot day..
Lucky catch before the compressor cooked itself just a fan motor replacement and back to blowing ice cold air ā„ļø Customer was stoked it wasn’t anything serious.

Ever wondered how your car’s aircon actually turns hot air into ice-cold breeze?
Here’s the full cycle from the compressor pressurizing the refrigerant, to the condenser cooling it down, expansion valve dropping the pressure, and evaporator blowing cold air straight to your vents. That’s the science behind staying cool in Aussie summer.

Dealership tried to sting this lady for $3,000 saying her evaporator was leaking… but 6 months later the system still had 90psi in it šŸ¤” Doesn’t add up.
If an evap leaks, you’ll smell gas through the vents and the system would be empty real quick.
All it needed was a simple regas top-up.. now it’s blowing 6° cold ready for Cairns summer.
Another happy customer and another rip-off avoided āœ…

Did a full A/C service for this customer about 7 months ago and added UV dye since the leak was too small to spot with standard nitrogen testing.
Came back today to recheck lucky I always stick my service date labels on the car so I can track it easily. After a full inspection with the UV light, I found the leak… unfortunately, it’s coming from the evaporator 😩
That means the whole dashboard has to come out.. definitely not the news anyone wants to hear, but at least now we know exactly where the problem is.

Customer been quoted $2500 for a new compressor… ended up being a $20 relay and 10min fix. Now it’s blowing ice cold, ready for FNQ summer ā„ļø
