Competition is back baby post the COVID party! The weekend had Cogs Carnival run by the local light car club. Last attempt at this event resulted in a broken Lancer with 16 bent valves. This year was much more drama free and we completed the AX and KX events despite the rain and wind. Ultimately a ripper weekend of punishing the Commodore as hard as we could, but again it has proven to be unbreakable.

Successful Bathurst weekend, although not at the great race this year progress was made in the workshop as we welcome the warmer weather.

A bit of a car shuffle and the next project has prime concrete space. Yes another project has started with none of the current ones finished, but it seems to be how we roll lately. But this is the last one, no more projects until we get some finished... 😎

And we are back on the track with our first event for the year and Ken had his first run in the Commodore since his Around Australia Trial win back in 1995! Sunday was the second round of the BLCC Autocross series held at the Ballarat Airport track so the Commodore got another run in anger. Weather was perfect with a nice N-NW wind to blow the dust away from the pit area and with the lack of any real dramas on track for the day we all easily got in six runs each.

Early runs were slow and we had cooling issues with the car which all changed after we reset the engine ignition timing and dropped tire pressures a couple of times. It would seem that the vacuum advance is not doing what it is suppose to and the static timing settings were not giving us the results we needed. So after run four we set 33 degrees of total ignition timing and the car came alive for the final two runs, instantly finding nearly 6sec a lap.

With the new lease on life from the engine, we dropped tire pressures down to 24psi at the front and 26psi at the rear and we started to enjoy some pace for the final runs. Next round we will continue to drop tire pressures to try and find some more turn-in control at the front and mid-corner stability at the rear which should get us into the thick of the competition and much further up the results table.

Our best run for the day was a 90.743 which isn’t bad but it was disappointing not to sneak into the 89sec bracket. Ed also just pipped Ken in fasted lap time and overall result so we will have to slap some pace into the old timer before the next event.

Magnificent outcome to the week on the Commodore rally car. Removing the fan and radiator to replace the knackered water pump and harmonic balancer and we found the missing chassis tag!

When we rescued the car from the thieving scumbags one ID tag was missing assumed stolen making the car really just a track car. Well thankfully due to their incompetence not only do we have a complete car, but no excuse not to get it re-registrated!

Had an apprentice in the workshop today, so actually got some progress. After a good clean this x-flow head will be ready to go back on and we will have a working Es**rt. We hope!

Good work Steve!

We had a great day at Sandown Raceway on Saturday with Ed completing the CAMS Ricciardo's Racers Level 1 and Level 2 courses on a makeshift skidpan in the members carpark. The courses are actually conducted exceptionally well with very good trainers. As much as it pains me to recommend CAMS to anyone, these courses are first class and highly recommended for juniors, plus exception value for money.

So the Level 2 course was held on a wet skid pan and concluded with a timed motokhana over two runs. Ed and the S16 took the honors and was the only vehicle in the 29sec bracket which is a great start for his first ahphelt event. Here is his second run to verify that the car stayed together for the whole day and was driven onto the trailer.

Visible in the video, the S16 did like to get up onto three wheels quite a bit on the course which was a definate crowd pleaser. Now it is time to go make it faster and well done to Ed.

This Saturday we are heading to Sandown as Ed is attending CAMS Ricciardo's Racers Junior Drive Day. As a result we have a couple of extra entry passes into the Shannon's Nationals which are also being held at the track. These passes are only for Saturday, so if you are interested send me a message.
