Method for upgrading a Mercedes W447 key to fingerprint and remote start - FBS4 4th Generation System

This is the original 4th generation car lock, Model 47. There are three mounting screws. There is a hidden screw under a paper sticker inside the hole, pierce through it.

[Disassembly of the Unit]
After removing the three screws, we can easily remove the rear cover using a plastic pry tool.

[Important Warning - Static Electricity]
Warning: Avoid touching the metal parts and the electronic circuit board directly with your hand. The components are very sensitive, and static electricity, especially in the autumn season, may cause permanent damage to the lock unit. You must discharge static electricity by touching a metal object before starting work, or wear insulating gloves.

After removing the cover, place this insulating foam pad inside the unit and make sure it is secured properly.

[Housing Modification]
Place the cardboard mounting template on top of the electronic board to mark the location, then cut a small opening to allow the wires to pass through. Use pliers to cut the opening just big enough for the wiring harness to pass through only.

Repeat the same process on the plastic housing. Align with the marked line and make a matching opening, then pass the wiring harness through the opening.

[Reassembly]
After passing the wires through, reinstall the electronic board. Make sure there is no bulging or protrusion at the four corners, and that the foam fills the gap tightly.

Reinstall the three screws. Caution: Do not tighten one screw fully at once. Tighten the three screws alternately and gradually, and do not overtighten. It is enough to feel slight resistance.

[Electrical Connections]
Plug the connector into the large connector, then connect the other end to its designated place in the lock unit. There is an additional small plug, connect it to its designated port.

The outgoing harness is connected to the main unit. This plug is dedicated to the mobile phone control system.

[First Test - Original Key]
This is the original car key. Let's test the original central locking system. The function works normally.

[Installing the Key into the New Unit]
Now we will remove the battery cover and the battery from the original key. After removing them, install the key's circuit board inside the new unit, press it down firmly, then close the housing.

The process is complete. Now the new key is ready.

[Final Test]
Insert the key into the ignition switch for a test. There is no problem at all.

Now let's try the newly added one-push start button. When using one-push start, the low-frequency LF antenna must be connected because it needs to detect the presence of the key inside the car. At this moment, press the brake pedal and then press the start button.

Turn off the engine.

Even if we disconnect the unit and insert the key normally, the car can also be started.

[Battery-less Start Test]
Now let's test the emergency start feature. We will completely remove the battery from the new key. Now without a battery, we connect the unit... The car also starts. This is a safety feature.

[Remote Control Test]
Stand near the car and press the unlock button on the remote, then the lock button. Press and hold the lock button for 3 seconds, the car will start and turn off remotely.

Catalytic Converter.

Crankshaft Position Sensor - The Complete Guide

1. What is the Crankshaft Position Sensor and What Does it Do?
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is one of the most critical sensors in modern engine management, for both gasoline and diesel engines.

The system consists of a stationary electronic sensor and a reluctor wheel with 60 teeth minus 2 (60-2) mounted on the crankshaft. The 2-missing-teeth gap is the reference point.

Operating Principle: As the crankshaft rotates, the teeth pass in front of the sensor, generating an electrical pulse for each tooth. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) counts and analyzes these pulses to determine:

A- Engine Speed (RPM): From the frequency of the pulses.
B- Exact Piston Position (TDC): By detecting the reference gap.
C- Engine Timing: Based on this data, the ECU precisely controls fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and synchronization with the Camshaft Sensor and the VVT system.

Without an accurate signal from this sensor, the engine cannot operate.

2. Causes of CKP Sensor Failure
1. Heat and Oil Contamination: Its location near the hot engine and exhaust causes its insulation to crack and allows oil to enter its internal circuit. 2. Torn / Damaged Wires: Drying and corrosion of the wiring and connector due to heat and friction. 3. Moisture Ingress: Water and mud intrusion, especially after high-pressure engine washing, causes circuit corrosion. 4. Magnetic Contamination: Its magnetic nature attracts iron filings from flywheel wear, weakening its signal. 5. Electrical Issues: Short circuit, blown fuse, or sudden voltage spike. 6. Wear & Tear: Its service life is typically between 120,000 to 200,000 km.
3. Symptoms of a Bad Crankshaft Position Sensor
1. Check Engine Light ON: With one of the following codes stored: P0335: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Malfunction
P0336: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range / Performance
P0337: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Low Input
P0338: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit High Input
P0339: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Intermittent
2. Hard Start / No Start: The engine requires several attempts because the ECU doesn't know the crank position. 3. Engine Stalling: The most dangerous symptom - the engine suddenly stops while driving and restarts after cooling down, indicating signal loss due to heat. 4. Rough Idle: Vibration and unstable RPM due to incorrect fuel and ignition timing. 5. Loss of Power: Hesitation and poor acceleration, especially on uphills. 6. Poor Fuel Economy: Due to inefficient combustion. 7. Exhaust Smell: Unburnt fuel reaches the exhaust with a gasoline or sulfur smell, which can damage the expensive Catalytic Converter.
4. Important Note: Do Not Replace it Immediately

Symptoms of a bad CKP sensor are identical to other failures. Check these before buying a new one:
1. Bad Camshaft Sensor: The working partner of the CKP sensor for timing. 2. Bad VVT Solenoid: Clogged with dirty oil, it causes valve timing failure. 3. Bad Spark Plugs / Coils: Cause misfire and power loss. 4. Bad Timing Belt / Chain: If loose or jumped, it causes desynchronization between crank and cam.
Professional Diagnosis: Inspect and clean the wiring and connector, then measure sensor resistance (a good inductive type reads 500-1000 ohms). The best method is to check the waveform with an oscilloscope. If the car fails to start when hot and starts immediately after cooling the sensor with water, the sensor is 100% faulty.
